Organic Farming Methods

People are growing more conscious about what they are eating. In line with the green movement, organic products are now widely available. The demand for organic products especially foods, are soaring. Why not take this opportunity to make your own organic product? You can start with learning the basics of organic farming methods.

We have come to the point of time where we use too much technology for our environment and its effects are slowly affecting how we live. Though we can’t completely disregard the use of technology, organic farming methods take a step back by using traditional farming methods and biological processes that are naturally occurring.

Organic farming methods aim at enhancing the production of our products without or with little artificial process and materials involved. Sustainable agriculture is also part of the goal. Organic farming methods include:

1.Crop Diversity. Farmers used to practice monoculture, or planting just one kind of crop. Though this reduces the cost for buying fertilizers, pesticides and machineries, this is also the reason why pests become immune to the pesticides farmers use. Later on these pests will withstand the chemicals being used on them and destroy the crops therefore destroying the livelihood of farmers. By planting different crops per land area will attract different soil microbes and some crops will serve as repellent to pests. Crop rotation also distracts some pests and their growth cycles, therefore diminishing their threat to the crops.

2.Compost. Fertilization is an essential part of farming. Organic farming method such as green manure and composting help in soil fertility. Microorganisms will help in fertilizing your soil and in nourishing your plants. Using composts and manure will decrease your need to buy expensive fertilizers.

3.Pest Control. Controlling pests is another organic farming method. Artificial pesticides are widely used, but in organic farming, neither pesticide nor insecticide is used. Crops that are resistant to diseases are used to keep diseases away. Crops that are disease-resistant help in discouraging harmful insects to grow.

Organic farming methods are now used to help us and our environment. Organic farming methods aim to provide us a sustainable agriculture. And by sustainable, it means preserving the nutrients of the soil and using organic fertilizers. When a soil is nourished it will be able to grow healthy crops thus giving the farmer a sustainable livelihood. By using organic farming methods, we create a balance in our ecosystem, because the damage we did to the environment is not irreversible but it can be delayed.
